Saratoga WarHorse
I have always wanted to help our Veterans and Service Members and every career move I did, I always thought of ways I could help but was never able to. I knew I wanted to donate to an organization and when I heard about Saratoga War Horse, I knew this was the perfect fit.
Through working together with the horses and finding trust in each other, it helps the Veterans and Service Members begin to move past their trauma while also giving the horses a start to their new life off the racetrack.
I will never truly understand what our Veterans and Service Members go through but I do know through my experience with horses just how powerful that bond can be and the feeling it can give you.
Below is more information on SWH.
Saratoga WarHorse Foundation (SWH) is a veteran-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the mission of improving the physical, mental, and emotional health of veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) by providing a healing, equine-assisted experience. This charity serves United States military Veterans and Service Members who are struggling with the invisible wounds caused by trauma. Saratoga WarHorse’s Veteran participants’ trauma is most often a result of combat experiences, military sexual trauma, training accidents, and/or transitioning from military to civilian life. The program helps these Veterans and Service Members to move past their trauma by partnering them with rescued and retired off-the-track Thoroughbred racehorses. This innovative approach to addressing PTS is called the “Connection Process,” and it is empirically-proven to improve participants’ quality of life. The “Connection Process” is not “therapy,” nor “equine therapy,” but it is undoubtedly a “therapeutic experience” for Veterans.
The Saratoga WarHorse program takes place during 3-day classes, offered several times each month, and is available to Veterans and Service Members from all branches of the military, regardless of when or for how long they served. There is absolutely NO cost for Veterans or Service Members to participate. The programs are offered in 3 locations: East Greenbush, NY; Baltimore County, MD; and Aiken, SC. Saratoga WarHorse covers the entire cost of transporting participants from anywhere in the United States and U.S. territories, as well as: lodging, meals, and program expenses. SWH is 100% funded by charitable contributions and serves over 200 Veterans and Service Members each year.
